Introduction to Biotechnology
Biotechnology is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make products, or "any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use" (UN Convention on Biological Diversity, Art. 2).
Biotechnology Course-Students enrolled in this course will apply advanced academic knowledge and skills to the emerging fields of biotechnology such as agricultural, medical, regulatory, and forensics. Students will have the opportunity to use sophisticated laboratory equipment, perform statistical analysis, and practice quality control techniques. Students will conduct laboratory and field investigations, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem solving. Students in Biotechnology 1 study a variety of topics that include structures and functions of cells, nucleic acids, proteins, and genetics.
I hope to make this an exciting year of learning. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at anytime.
Thank you,
Ms. Arlene Perez

Clocking In and Out for Biotechnology class
You will need to clock in and out of class every time you attend class. I am looking for punctuality (getting to class on time), attendance and to make sure that you take responsibility for what you are responsible for the day. The way you will clock in is through Schoology. When you log into you Schoology, you will the go to the Sign in folder.
Clock in Folder in SchoologyYou will use the folder in Schoology to find your "clock in" and "clock out" folder. When you go to the folder find the week we are on then the day of logging in.
What must be in your folder
Time: You need to place the time that you "clocked in." Although when you submit your "clocked in" and "clocked out" form, you will have a time stamp, I want you to write your time and put it in 24h time.
Next, you will write a summary of what is expected of you for the day. You will write this out in proper paragraph form. The more details you include the better. I will grade for accuracy
This will be a weekly grade where I will be looking at
Attendance, punctuality, and accuracy of expectations. I will have a rubric available for you soon.
Remember, you need to let me know in advance if you are not going to attend class for any reason. You can email me if you know in advance, if it is the day of the absence, send me a Remind message.

Today for Biotechnology I, what I am expected to do is take my Science Lab Safety Exam, watch a video on the Cycle of Scientific Thinking, learn vocabulary on Scientific Methods and observations. I will be playing the game of Clue and pay attention to how this game I can connect it to utilizing the Scientific Method. I will accomplish these tasks by taking my exam on Schoology. I must pass this exam with a 90 or better or I am expected to take it over until I get that 90. I will then review the given videos and power points to understand the Scientific Method and Observations. I will then play a game of Clue to practice observation skills. I will then connect them to the Scientific Method and Observations where I will discuss this in my Log out document.

How to take time using a 24hr clock
Note Taking Skills
Taking good notes is a skill that students take for granted. In this class you will be taking many notes. Some of the notes you will be taking will be part of a lab grade, so taking good notes is very important. I will be guiding you on good note taking skills as the class moves on.
Remind Log In
Use the following code to log into remind. Class messages will be sent through remind and you can use it to send me messages as well. This will not be an option. You will need to sign up for remind either through your phone or your computer. You can download the app. to make it easier for you.
