ECOLOGY 4/13/20
is the branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings. We will be going through different content in this section.
Introduction to Ecology Project
You will do an Ecology project looking at an Endangered Species and look at it in an ecological and conservationalist way. I have a template available to you for this project and I have included some endangered species that you can use however you can choose one that is not on this list. I will go over the project breakdown in both the video and I will also write it for you. I have included the template and a downloadable template for you to use and edit. You will upload that on Schoology. Remember, delete directions. You will have a timeline for different sections of you project so that you are not doing the project at the last minute to get it in. Keep up with the timeline, you will be graded for those different sections as well as the overall project.
Project Template
This is the project template. I have placed it on Scribe so that you can see it but don't download it from Scribe, use the button under to download it and use that to make your project presentation. You will not have to present it, you are just using the power point to place the information for your project.

TimeLine for Project
Slide 1 to 4-Due by Monday 4/13/20 for B day and Tuesday 4/14/20 for A day at 11:59 on Schoology
The following is the first part in your timeline for you to follow what needs to be done by when for your project. I will have additional small assignments for you to do to help you understand the sections in the project.
1) Slides 1 to 4-Introduction to your Endangered Animal. You will pick an endangered animal and provide the following for that chosen animal.
a. Slide 1 Title Page
b. Slide 2-Name of your Endangered Animal-Both the Common Name and the Species Name as well as any identifying feature of your animal. Be sure to provide a picture of your animal.
c. Slide 3-Habitat of your Animal-a habitat is the type of natural environment in which a particular species of organism lives. A species' habitat is those places where the species can find food, shelter, protection, and mates for reproduction. It is characterized by both physical and biological features. In this slide tell what kind of habitat your animal lives in and provide a picture.
d-Slide 4-Diet of the Endangered Species. You will tell me what your endangered species eats. What kind of a consumer is it. Look at the PowerPoint below for that information. I have also included videos on types of consumers. Tell me what its role in the ecosystem is, is a primary consumer, secondary, both, etc... also, let me know if it is a predator or prey. I have also left you a video that talks about predators and prey.
***I know this seems like a lot but it really is not. Slide 3 and 4 may be the more difficult slide in this section but they are really not that bad. Remember, communication is key. If you have any questions please ask me.

Power Point-Intro part of Project
I have voiced over the parts of the power point that you can use to help you do the above sections of your project. I have included the power point as well as a downloadable feature, however it will incude all of the powerpoint so it has more information than what I have voiced over.

Timeline Continued for Project
Slide 5 to 8-Due by Wednesday 4/15/20 for B day and Thursday 4/16/20 for A day at 11:59 on Schoology
The following is the second part in your timeline for you to follow what needs to be done by when for your project. I have added some interactive links for you in better understanding food webs and food chains. You can also find these in Schoology. You will also have a quiz to do on Food Webs and Food Chains. You can find it on Schoology. You will have multiple attempts on that quiz and I have it open till the weekend.
1) Slides 5 to 8-These slide cover Food Chain, Food Web and Energy Pyramid for your Endangered Animal. Make sure that the food chain, web and pyramid are all for your specific endangered animal.
a. Slide 5- Food Chain and Food Web-In this slide you will get a picture of a food chain and Food web for your endangered animal. Make sure that the chain and web are specific to your animal. When searching for it type "food chain for (your animal). This way you have a good chance of having the food chain and web specific for your animal. Be sure that it is for your animal before you place it on your slide. Make sure that you copy the link for your picuture and place it under your pictures. Here you should be able to tell the role of your animal, whether it is a primary consumer, secondary consumer etc. Remember, your animal can be a primary and secondary comsumer if it is an ominvore. This information is what you need for slide 4.
b. Slide 6-Role of the Sun in a Food Web andFood Chain. This may not necessaraly be associated with the project in general but it is important for food chains and webs. Make sure that you explain the role of the sun in a food chain, food web and bring in a picture. It could be a picture of the sun or a picture of your animal enjoying the sun. On your picture make sure that site the picture. Under your picture place the link on where you found your picture.
c. Slide 7-What kind of Detritivore would be found in your endangered species’ ecosystem. Again, this is not completely related to your project but it is important for an ecosystem. Look up the habitat or ecosystem or where your animal is from and see what kind of detritivores are found in that area. Let me know here. I am not requiring a picture but you can include one if you want. Again, if you do add a picture tell me where you found it by including the link.
d-Slide 8-Food Pyramid-Here you will find a food pyramid for your endangered animal. Make sure that it is specific to your endangered animal. Again, like in the food chain, food web, look up. food pyramid for (endangered animal). This way you are getting a specific food pyramid for your specific animal. In the ameoba sisters video they do a good job of expaining the loss of energy as you move up a food pyramid. You need to explain the loss of energy for your food pyramid on this slide.
***I know it seems like a lot but it is not. Remember, communication is key. If you need time, you need to let me know. Use the information I have provided to you to help you in this section of your project.

Interactive Games on Food Webs and Food Chains
The following are interative food webs. You can find these on Schoology as well
Endangered Species Project-Final two Slide 10 and 11
You will be finishing your project at this time. Do the final two slide, slide 9 and 10. These are specific to the project itself.
Slide 9-Causes of being an Endangered Species. In this slide you will explain some of the causes for why your selected animals is considered an endangered species. You must give me at least three reasons for why your animal is endangered. Make sure that you include a picture. Make sure that you tell me where you found your picture. Get the link of where you found the picture and include that link under your picture.
Slide 10-Help for the Endangered Species-On this slide you will tell me some of the things that are being done to help the endangered species. You can include any kind of projects or laws that help with the concervation of your animal. If you have an idea of how your animal can be saved, you can state it here as well.
This concludes your project. Review the rubric so that you can see if you have everything for the highest possible grade. After you are satified with what you have, just upload it in the final project section on Schoology.

Ecological Succession
Ecological succession is the gradual process by which ecosystems change and develop over time. Nothing remains the same and habitats are constantly changing. There are two main types of succession, primary and secondary. Ecological succession is a very important form of grown and development of an ecosystem as a whole. ... It allows new areas to be colonized, and damaged ecosystems to be recolonized, so organisms can adapt to the changes in the environment and continue to survive. Primary succession is the series of community changes that occur on an entirely new habitat that has never been colonized before. For example, a newly quarried rock face or sand dunes. Secondary succession is the series of community changes that take place on a previously colonized, but disturbed or damaged habitat.
The following videos will help in understanding Ecological Succession. When you are done do the interactive assignment then answer the questions in the Ecological Succession quiz that you can find on Schoology.

Ecological Succession Interactive Activity
Do the following interactive activity the do the assessment on Schoology.
Carbon and Nitrogen Cycle
The carbon and nitrogen cycle are important in keeping the ecology of the world working. Watch the following video to learn about the Nitrogen and Carbon Cycle
Interactive Games
The following are two interactive games from Brain Pop that will help you in understanding Carbon and Nitrogen Cycles.
Discussion on Nitrogen Cycle
In Schoology, you will have a discussion board that you will answer. This is your grade for this section.
Limiting Factors
An important thing about ecological areas is that there are some limiting factors that will affect the growth of their ecosystem. Watch the following video that talks about Limiting Factors. Then do the interactive games from the link below. All the different games deal with Limiting factors and it is also a good way to see how different organizations do to help with limiting factors.
On Schoology, do the assessments on Limiting Factors and the assessment on Ecology Extras
