Making a DNA Model-Jan 11/14
As a class in whole, you will be making a model of DNA. While creating the model, you can start to answer the questions on the worksheet below. I have also attached a copy of the worksheet on Schoology. You will need to upload the worksheet on Schoology. This is due today Friday,1/11/19 for 1st period and Monday 1/14/19 for 6th and 7th period.

3D DNA Model and Presentation
You will be creating a 3D DNA Model with your table mates. The DNA model will be given to you in a box. In the box you have the Standard Operating Procedures (Directions). You will be following the directions without my guidance. This is so that you get use to using Standard Operating Procedures. After you have created your model, you will be presenting it to your fellow classmates. We will have a practice day and you will have a journal to write. This is what must be presented when doing our model presentation.
1. What is DNA and why is it important
2. What is the biomolecule that DNA belongs to and what is the monomer. Then explain that monomer in your model
3. Structure of the DNA model-What makes up the backbone, the rungs, and what is the shape of DNA
4. The base pairs follow a particular patten based of Chargoff's rules. Explain what Chargoff's rule is and explain what purines and pyrimidines are and why they have the specific base pairing
5. What is the bond that hold the DNA strand together
6. Why did you create your model the way you did.
Everybody in the team must do a part of the presentation. You decide who will present what. We will present on Thursday/Friday 1/23-24

Design your own DNA Experiment-Jan 23/24
You have done DNA extraction using the above procedure, but there are other ways to extract DNA. You will be designing an experiment with DNA extraction. In your experiments, you will now change a variable in the procedure so that you can come up with your own experiment on DNA extraction.
Some example of variations to the lab can be:
Example 1
Which fruit will give me more DNA-but be prepared to answer why? Also, you will need to provide your own fruit. I do have strawberries, but that is all I have.
Example 2
Do you have to have accurate measurements when doing a DNA extraction to get a better sample, or does it really make a big difference if you don't exactly have the same amount that is asked.
Example 3
Does the percentage of alcohol matter when doing a DNA extraction? If I use 91% or 50%, or 71% is it going to make a difference?
Example 4
Which buffer solutions is best in DNA extraction? You will need to research different buffer solutions.
Example 5
When making a buffer solutions, are all the ingredients truly necessary for DNA extraction?
Example 6
Does the temperature of the alcohol matter when doing the extraction?
You can use these or come up with your own. Remember that it is an experiment, so you will need to perform it a few times, at least 5 times, so that you can say that what your data shows is accurate based on your experiment. Remember, repeat-ability in science is important.
The way you will be presenting this is through video, like a podcast. You will have to video tape it. Yes, you will need to edit.
This is a group assignment, and it will be done in pairs. No more than two people. If I have an uneven number of student in the class, I will allow 1 or 2 students to do the experiment alone, but it will be allowed to the first ones that ask. You will be signing a parter contract.
Keep in mind you are responsible for your own supplies. I will not be providing the variables for you. That is up to you. I do have some stuff, but you need to come and ask me if you can use them. Also, It is your responsibility to clean up. I will be walking around to make sure that you are picking up after yourselves and cleaning whatever glassware you are using. This will be part of the grade for your experiment.
Video Pod Cast
You will be doing a video pod cast of your experiment. You will run through the whole experimental design in your video pod cast. You can use any video platform but make sure you can edit it and upload it on Schoology. The experimental design is as follows
1) Background information
The background information that must be in your video is on DNA. Be as detailed as possible about what it is, the structure, rules that it follows, etc...
The other information you will need is on DNA extraction: What is DNA extraction and why is it important
2). Breakdown of the experiment: This is a quick rundown of what you will be doing for your experiment, you will have to include the:
Independent Variable
Dependent Variable
Control
You will need to include both a
Hypothesis and the Null Hypothesis
This is due on Tues 1/28 for A day and Wed 1/29 for B day, you will have a journal to do today discussing what you did and what you will still need to get done. The journal will be at least 100 words (you can go over not under.) Those will be due at 1159 on Mon 1/27 for A day and Tues 1/28 on B day
Timeline
Jan 27/28-You will work on the background information of your experiment. Look at the breakdown for what you need for background information and experiment design. You should start to video taping today. I will ask you to upload this much of the video on the next class session.
Jan 29/30-Work on your experiment for your DNA extraction. You will have a Journal to do for this.
Feb 3/4-Work on Editing your video. Make sure that you look at the Rubric below to see that you have everything you need for the PodCast
Feb 6/7-Video Pod Cast For DNA extraction in due at 2359 on Schoology-You will not be working on this in class.
Happy experimenting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Article Review
You will be doing an article review on the article below. Click on the link, read the article. For your review, you will need to summarize the article, state some of the important uses of DNA. Make sure that you do state the arthur is and when it was published. This first part should be written in third person. This next section is your opinion, so here you can state it in first person. Last, summarize everything that was stated in your review. This review should be at least 500 words. You can go over but you can not have less. If you do, I will not grade it and you will have to fix it till you have the proper amount of words.
How to Use a Micropipette
